The past is rarely worth dredging up. If something good happened in the past, it was done with, and should just be a memory. If something bad happened in the past, bringing it to the present almost always causes harm. Most things from the past are best left in the past.

The planned development of the third Sojourn was having a hard time raising funds. Something about the proposed location of South Central bothered people. Millie and Tatiana called every alumni member at USC and still could not meet the budget needed to get the space open. The irony of it all was that USC was located right near South Central. But even with the close proximity, USC was far from South Central with its red brick buildings and well manicured athletic fields.

Then Millie went to an alumni event and met Jordan Brokaw, a football player turned business mogul who owned a chain of car dealerships throughout California. He had these tacky commercials where he dressed in a football uniform and offered to beat everyone’s price in town by tackling his competition. At the end of the commercial, he ran towards the camera and tackled it down.

Jordan needed a tax write off and didn’t care how he got it. Millie told him about The Sojourn and her partner. Jordan remembered Tatiana. He remembered she was the teacher’s aide in his freshman art history class and the hottest girl on campus. He didn’t care that she was five years older than him; Jordan was a stud and believed he could have any girl on campus, even graduate students.

And when Jordan wanted something, he wanted it immediately. He couldn’t stand the idea that Tatiana had gotten away. So he gave Millie one shot at his donation. He demanded a meeting the very next day, a Sunday.

Millie called Tatiana at 10:15 on a Saturday night and explained she found the rest of the funds, but they had to meet with the contributor on Sunday. Tatiana didn’t remember Jordan. She did remember there were a lot of athletes in that class and most of them were jerks. And all of them hit on her. She refused to give up Family Day for some former football player who sold cars in a football uniform. Colby would already be missing Family Day; she wasn’t going to bail out on her daughter for some inflexible, has-been stud. In truth, Tatiana had never cared for football or football players. Every last one she met at USC was itching to get in her pants, and vulgar and crass in their attempts to do so.

Millie tried to reason with her, reminding her it was for The Sojourn. Tatiana finally conceded to have them join her and Angelina for lunch at Le Café but she invited them to come late, so she would have most of the day with Angelina. And Irena. The thought some how slipped into her mind.

Sunday started off perfect. Colby was able to make part of Family Day, taking Angelina to the golf course and giving Tatiana a break from the game she utterly disliked.
